Burmese minister to brief Asean on disaster
Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win will attend the Asean foreign ministers meeting to be held in Singapore next Monday to inform them of the latest situation report on the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis on May 3 and its aftermath in Burma, a senior Thai foreign ministry official said Wednesday.
Asean Affairs Department director-general Vitthawat Srivihok said Nyan Win had agreed to attend the meeting, report on the Myanmar government's assessment of the situation, and that his country would accept humanitarian aid from the nine other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
He said that Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan of Thailand had contacted the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund requesting aid to Burma.
Representatives of Asean member countries have already entered Burma and each member of the group is likely to dispatch three experts to map out plans to cope with future disaster, according to Mr Vitthawat.
The Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) includes Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. (TNA)
